Many gem grade green diopsides come from high grade metamorphic and ultramafic rocks in ancient shields, with host rocks laid down and transformed during Proterozoic mountain building between roughly 1.9 and 1.0 billion years ago, and the species also shows up in Archean mantle rocks older than 2.5 billion years.
